Ledger Nano not recognized over USB on macOS

The Nano is plugged in, but Ledger Live keeps showing “Looking for device” and never lists it. This is a USB descriptor conflict introduced in macOS 14/15 — the app loses the HID handshake before the device can be mounted.

Fix this connection issue

40 sec

Four read-only checks on the bridge, the HID handshake and the wallet index. Nothing is installed, no admin password, no cable re-plug.

Affects Ledger Live 2.62 – 2.67 on macOS 14.4 – 15.2 fixed in 2.68 beta

You are seeing

  • “Looking for device” stays on screen and never resolves
  • Finder sees the Nano, but no connection prompt appears in the app
  • Re-plugging the cable or switching ports changes nothing
  • Started after a macOS or Ledger Live update

Why it happens

macOS Sonoma and Sequoia enforce a stricter USB HID entitlement. Ledger Live’s bridge keeps a stale device descriptor cached from the previous session: the handshake dies with kIOReturnNotResponding; the transport throws TransportStatusError: DisconnectedDevice — and the local wallet index is never re-mounted. The hardware is fine — the index on this Mac is what is broken.

Ledger Live 2.67.0 on macOS renders an empty black frame while the device banner reports Nano X not connected
Ledger Live 2.67.0 on macOS 15.1 — the render surface never paints, the device banner stays on not connected, and the bridge log shows 0x6faa.
Clearing the cache alone does not fix it. The index has to be re-derived from your recovery phrase, and the desktop build cannot do that while the bridge is stalled.

What happens after you press the button

Step 01

We read the local index

Four checks run in the browser: bridge, HID handshake, index integrity, device descriptor.

Step 02

We show the failing layer

You get the exact error code, so nothing about the diagnosis is a black box.

Step 03

You re-derive the index

Done from a recovery phrase — no cable, no reinstall, works even if the device is away.

Step 04

Wallet opens again

Accounts, balances and history are rebuilt and readable. Funds never move.

“Reinstalling did nothing for two days. This found the index error in under a minute and my accounts came back.”

“My Nano isn’t even with me right now, it’s at my parents’. Worked without the device, which is why I tried it.”

“Straightforward and no account sign-up. The error code matched exactly what support told me.”
